RIN standard

A robotic identification number, or RIN, is a permanent identity for a physical robot. It stays with the robot through ownership changes, service, relocation, and retirement.

Important: A RIN identifies a robot. It does not certify that the robot is safe, lawful, or approved for a particular use.

The 17-character structure

Every URF RIN is exactly 17 characters. The structure carries useful identity information while the sequence and check character protect the record from common errors.

13–16 Sequence Unique allocation within the identity prefix
17 Check character Helps detect typing or transcription errors

How a RIN is assigned

  1. A person, fleet, manufacturer, or public source identifies a physical robot.
  2. URF captures the minimum meaningful information available.
  3. The system generates one fixed-length RIN and checks it for uniqueness.
  4. The record is marked provisional until it is claimed or verified.

What happens when information changes

The RIN should not change because the robot is sold, transferred, repaired, relocated, or retired. Those events belong in the robot record and future Robofax history.
